Women in bands have long struggled to be taken seriously in a profession designed for men. Many women in high school and college bands have experienced discrimination.

Historical Background

The history of all-women swing bands is less well documented, and researchers haven’t yet adequately explored the influence that these groups had on music. Similarly, while research on the issues faced by female band directors is growing, studies are often presented as isolated results that fail to provide a comprehensive overview of the problem. A review of these studies, as well as an examination of the historical context that surrounds them, could help future musicians find a path forward.

Underrepresentation and Lack of Female Mentors

Women make up the majority of the population, but are often underrepresented in many professions, especially in STEM and music. Despite this, there are still plenty of female rockers who are leading the way for their fellow band members onstage.

However, these effects did not translate into changes in GPA trajectories for students with mentors from their own gender. This suggests that other factors may be at play.

Motherhood

The Righteous Mothers have balanced the demands of music and motherhood, bringing their genre-bending harmonies and social commentary to classrooms, coffeehouses, and festivals across the northwest. With songs about ice cream, labor pains, and Supreme Court decisions, the band has managed to find a voice that’s both witty and tender.

Discrimination
